Curtis and I headed out with Chris for a last minute trip to try to
bag some inshore Snaps. We were hesitant at first due to the unnecessary
freeze warning advised for earlier in the morning. Upon waking up it was
warmer than predicted. Weather was awesome and seas were calming. Hit the
water kinda late but didn't take long to get to Chris' secret spot and the
fish were hungry waiting for us. Action started immediately with Chris and
Curtis getting some quality fish.
The water was more of a murky green and were surprised we were getting
anything at all. Despite the fact, I started jigging and getting cut off
by what seemed to be Spanish near the surface. I kept at it though and finally
hooking up to a grander Snapper.
I would get tired from jigging and just end up putting a bait
down instead. Not long and I get hooked up again. This time another grander
Snap... this Dinosaur going 35"
Curtis would soon attempt the same thing, results slightly varied...
Meanwhile Chris is trying to do the same thing but ends up attracting a horde
of Bull Sharks.
Curtis would show off and land (and release) this nice Grouper.
I would eventually go back to jigging and immediate pull a Cobia off the
bottom.
Chris would once again be caught playing with the sharks.
While hoping for a Sandbar or something, it seemed for some strange
reason only the Bulls were around.
Chris releases his second Bull of the trip.
We soon decide to pack it up. One one of my last attempts down with
the jig I snag a large Lookdown. One of the bigger ones i've seen but just
short of the state record.
We started late and finished early. We're back on our way home
by 3pm and had some good eats. The Snapper were of nice size but not as beefy
as they usually are, guessing due to the colder water and not feeding as
much. Winter inshore usually sucks, but proved to be quite fun today... and
a added bonus of bagging a Ling and Grouper made it even that much more cool!
Thanks to Chris for a great trip!
