There was a chill in the air..
and the wind blew. Curtis and I were busy Saturday night and Sunday seeking
Drum from the comfort of the house. After exhaustively landing only about
a half dozen, we all but given up. Come 2pm we take a look at the surf and
to our delightful surprise the North wind shifted West and blew the surf
flat. Just now finding out the primo conditions we had to take advantage
and quickly loaded up the truck and ran down the beach.
The water temp at the gaurd shack read 58 deg.. and it felt
every bit of it. We make out way down just past the oil crew not wanting
to go too far south due to current wind direction. We run into Hardhead running
off the beach and he gives us a few Rockstar Whiting to add toour Drum
supply to get started.
We set up and start rigging baits. Close to sunset I hop in
the wetsuit and begin deploying a 4W, 6W, Super 6, and two 900's. I missed
a run early which devoured a Whiting.. and another bait got slammed. I re-rig
and run again. It isnow close to dark and the full moon is on its way
over the horizon... this is going to be a cold but good night.
Around 8pm Curtis' Daiwa 900 configured with a whole fresh Drum at
the end starts screaming into the night. The fight was on!!
Curtis' drag on the reel started slipping on him but eventually
was able to fight the fish accordingly. After close to 30 minutes, we get
the shark in the wade gut and I get the tail rope on. Curtis has just landed
his biggest Sandbar Shark to date.. a fat healthy female ringing in at 7'4"
estimated over200lbs.
As we are tagging and measuring the Shark my Super 6/0 goes
off but was not there in time to set the hook. Continue to help release the
Shark and my 6W with a whole Drum gets hammered. Curtis is left alone to
release the beast as I run down to see what is going on. I feel something
on there messing with it but know it is no giant. I decided to reel it in
and it ends up being a 5'2" Sandbar Shark. A quick pic and tag then she is
on her way to meet up with mama.
I ran baits back out again around 10:30pm then put the yak away
for the 2nd time for the night. After sitting around for an hour or so Curtis'
other 900 slackens up but not much is happening until he messes around with
it. After a couple minutes of setting the weight the line takes off briefly
and Curtis is hooked up again. After a short fight he gets in his 2nd Sandbar
Shark of the night. While putting up a good fight, this beast was nowhere
near his first of the evening.
We had 3 remaining rods out but it was getting a bit chilly out and
insanity began to set in after a couple hours. Curtis began experimenting
with long-exposure on his camera while we were conducting some various FX
in the background. Nonetheless, the pics turned out rather interesting.
We stayed another hour or so and packed it up around 3am. It was getting
cold.. real COLD. Anyway, had fun for an unexpected evening of sharkfishing
during an arctic blast with 15mph winds most of the early evening. We'll
take 3 Sandbars any night!
