Here are some recent pictures of my latest overnight trip with my
boy when we headed down south to Big Shell in the 40's. We ran out 2 12/0's,
1 9/0, a super 6/0 with a Newell spool, and also a super 4/0. We had a northeast
wind blowing around 10-15mph. All baits were run with the zodiac over the
3rd sandbar and threw some over the 2nd sandbar. Around 2pm we set up camp
and gathered some firewood then I ran out the super 4/0 out to the 2nd gut
before the big bar drop off. It had a large freshly caught whiting on a 10'
cable wire hoping to catch a big Blacktip Shark... then around 4pm I notice
the line slack immediately after setting the weight to find out I had a fish
on...it was a 42'' monster red fish.
I'm thinking it was a pregnant fish. I removed hook and released
the fish to live another day. Later that day my boy Brian hooked up with
some nice keeper reds in the first gut..the pic he is holding a 28 keeper
red that went to straight to ice chest.
Brian also hook-up with a 24'' and 26''. He caught his limit
of Reds and released some more keeper and and rat Reds, all the reds were
taken on fresh cut Whiting. After dinner the sound of the super 6 reel started
screaming...it had a large fresh whiting attached to the hook. It started
stripping away the 80lb line and was down to 1/2 spool and while I started
to tighten the drag the line had less than 1/8 of the spool left. After locking
down on the drag the fish started to turn...40 minutes had passed from the
screaming of the line until the 6' 8'' Sandbar was beached. My son Brian
had tail roped the fish and removed the 16/0 circle hook..took photos and
he was released to fight another day.
Then before calling a night I heard the 12/0 start to click..I
reeled the loose slack and reset the weight...the 12/0 was baited with a
medium size Bonita...the Bonita was about 450+ yards out. I woke the next
mourning to discover the the 12/0 with the Bonita had a slack line..then
down the beach north of me around 350 yard in the second gut I saw my float.
I jumped in my zodiac and chased the float to discover a 6' 4'' sandbar shark
on it. Brian reeled in the shark and was released.
