YT, Troy, Matt, Rodney, Jim, Scott Andrews, and I headed offshore to the floaters Thursday around noon on the NYATI. The seas were favorable, so we made good time.

We arrived about 5:00 p.m. and decided to troll for marlin and yellowfin until dark. Other than a blackfin, the trolling was uneventful, so we got ready for the main event--the nighttime yellowfin bite.

Report Image

Right after sunset, we started noticing a few yellowfin blowing up on the surface. We threw topwaters for awhile, but had no takers. Thereafter, we started jigging blackfin for chunk baits. Almost every drop of a diamond jig would produce a blackfin. We ended up catching 45-50, saving 27 for the table and cutting up the rest for bait.

Matt started the yellowfin bite with one in the 40# range. We then fished until sunrise, picking one off here and there. We ended up with 5 yellowfin, all in the 40-50# class. Three were caught on chunks, 1 on a flying fish, and 1 on a live bait. Strangely, the bread and butter bait, flying fish, were not around the lights.

During the night, we caught a 6-7' dusky or silky which was picking off our chunks. We released him, but he had some short-term memory problems, so we kept catching him throughout the night.

Report Image

The next morning, we trolled around the rig, picking up 3 wahoo and 2 nice oceanic bonita/skipjack tuna.

Report Image

We trolled a bit the rest of the day before heading in to clean a big mess of quality fish.

Once again, Thanks YT for another sweet fish-catching trip on the NYATI.
