A large abundance of fish and less than horrible conditions about sumarize the weekend. Scott and I head down right before noon on Friday to meetup for the Sharkathon registration. We get business taken care of and roll down the beach eventually meeting up with Moose and his bro. After an endless onslaught of torrential rains, the skys finally clear as we make our way down south.

We finally found a very impressive stretch of beach with deep water coming rightinto the beach. We get started and set up camp thawing big baits, and casting small baits. The finger Mullet were absolutely thick and we rounded up a couple dozen and sent out on cast baits.

It started off slow but finally had a good run. I look just past the first bar and see a 4-5' Tarpon lauch out of the water like a spaceshuttle. Unfortunately it spit the hook after a few seconds but I re-bait and cast back out. Finally get a solid hookup and knew it was either a Red or Jack.. in this case it was a nice Jack that made its way to the baitchest.

After the first Jack, I quickly hook into and land a carbon copy Crevalle. The sun that graced us for a short period of time quickly diminished and large storm clouds overshadowed us once again.

Not long after Scott nails a nice Jack.

By now we have already landed 3 Jacks and jumped one Tarpon. Unfortunately the weed was making its presence well know and was becoming more of an obnoxious and pointless challenge to keep baits out. We make an executive decision to roll back up the beach to the high-banks right before sunset. As we get there Moose and his bro finally arrive. Mullet are still running and the Reds storm in with a vengence and Moose begins to pick up a couple. Scott immediately nails a 41" and shortly after lands and releases this 45", the 3rd place Red in the tournament.

The next day we woke to beautiful conditions and a relatively calmsurf. A monster bait a piece was run out by Scott, Moose, and myself. We kept these prestine pieces of beef out as long as we could battling the weed left and right. We were finally subdued by mother nature and pretty much shut down for the rest of the trip.

PCJ44 wrote in with his report as follows...

Jeff and myself hit la playa around 1:00p.m. Friday and after registering into the shark division we headed south. After searching for a spot away from the crowds and weed, we finally stopped around 39 miles down. Not long after fishing for bait Jeff nails a good 12/0 bait.

Shortly after and a couple of reds later I end up with a good bait myself.

We set out two shark rods before dark but they were quickly weeded out so we went to sleep. After some close lighting we woke up the next morning and ran out two big baits on our 12's. About noon, we decided to put out a rod for medium sized sharks and ended up catching a 5'2'' Blacktip soon after.

Still nothing on the monster baits and as night fell we ended up with another Blacktip, this one being 5'3''

As the night progressed our 12's remained silent and our hopes of a monster faded, lol.

Ended up with another small shark to make the total 3 but that was not enough to place. The trip was fun and Sharkaton was awesome, thanks to everyone that made it possible, can't wait until next year. - Peace Joey

And finally, here is Frenzy's report from just further north of us..

All in all it was great weekend. Dustin ended up catching his biggest fish to date being a 39.5" Bull Red. I ended up getting my Bull and we had the whole father and son thing going on.

Also wanted to say congrats to all the winners. It was nice seeing everybody and I hope to see yall on the sand real soon. I really think that if it wasn't for the weed we would have seen some really big sharks. They were there. But the baits just wouldn't stay.

Until next time, It is on.
