Kyle 'Sharken' and I headed down early Fri AM before sunrise to meet up with Curtis 'Curmit' and Trevor 'Repofish'. Morning came and with the original intention to shark fish.. either from surf or kayak. Conditions were not quite optimal for such operations considering a roaring current with tons of debris and weed knocking out both baits I ran that day. Plans changed and we began to fish for Reds and Jacks.Curtis catches and releases a slightly oversized red with old shark wounds.

Report Image

It didn't take long before the action to start rocking. It seemed like every few minutes the Reds would run through and tear up the mullet. Curtis and Kyle begun slamming the Reds one after another until reaching their limits.

Report Image

Through the course of the day several more folkswould come to join us. Not long and Repo gets a few including a barely oversized Red that was released. Before we knew it we all had our limits of Reds and were releasing from then on. Still no Jacks were to be found in our location.

With the wind blowing like mad out of the south, the current was absolutely ripping. As evening was approaching and not wanting to risk running a bait, I simply cast a decent bait into the wade gut (at the time close to high tide). The bait sat out all night.. Around 5am my reel goes off. At this time the tide was pretty low and the wade gut might have been 3' if that. But it didn't stop this fat healthy Bull Shark from snatching up a quick meal. Kyle leadered the shark and finalized the business before the release.

Daylight soon followed and conditions dramatically improved. We were able to keep baits out and the wind was dying down. We stayed at our location for a bit without any activity and then decided to head south thanks to persuasion from Nate. We find a killer spot way far south and setup again. Right off the bat Dustin lands his first (of 3) Slot Reds.

Report Image

I am setup at the southern end of the camp and notice the guys leadering a shark on the other end. Kevin lands a nice Blacktip.Curtis goes over and takes a pic before the release.

Report Image

While attempting to catch some more Reds, I land a few monster Skipjack in the process. I rig up and deploy and about an hour later I get a large female Blacktip on the beach.

Report Image

After tagging and releasing the shark, I notice the guys going at it again and this time Dustin lands a nice Stingray by himself. This became part of the bait arsenal that would be deployed out for Frenzy overnight. By now lil Dustin is kicking butt and outfishing us! Way to go bud!

Report Image

A few more minutes pass and the rod goes off again. This time it ends up being a smaller Blacktip just over 5'. Tagged and released this shark as well.

Report Image

We run out a massive array of large baits for the night. Shortly after sunset Skipjack gets hooked into a nice shark but after fighting it for several minutes it eventually bites through the leader. Frenzy hooks up on a nice fish from a casted bait but is later cutoff in the early stages of the fight. During the course of the night, we had the lines of 5 12/0's cut (3 recovered in the morning) among others. We 'cut' our losses and decide to enjoy the fillet minion provided by Repofish. Curtis cooked it up awesome along with several links of sausage. Sometimes the beach cooking makes every trip worth coming down for. First thing in the morning the Nate crew catches a monster Jack on a kayaked bait. Garrett then deployed a good portion on his 14/0. About an hour or less later it starts taking off and they grab it.

Report Image

Garret quickly raced for the rod and the excitement was on. Obviously a strong and large shark picked up the bait but it wasn't long until Garrett decided to get the battle over as soon as possible. He tightens the drag almost locked and starts the process of walking back bringing him in slow and steady. Constantly feeling the massive fish he continues the trend. After several minutes he gets it into the 1st gut where something unfortunate but very impressive happens.

Report Image

The shark comes free and swims off before we could get a good look at it. It had straightened both hooks that were in Jack. The 'J' hook was destroyed and the 20/0 circle was spread almost 3". The cable on the primary drop was pretty close to being bit through. Either a mad monster Bull or Hungry Tiger. Bummer on the loss but provided us some action while it lasted.

Report Image

Weed was coming in and storms were brewing. Frenzy and I decided to slowly pack up and head back north several miles. On are way we run across Old Salt and decide to fish a spot he recommended. Nothing for the rest of the day and heading off the beach. Overall it was another fun trip and great group of guys as usual. The food was killer and most of us had a load of fun with the Reds and Sharks. Kcon reported Spanish from the kayak, and the Gollas' reported a mixed bag including a couple smaller Bull Sharks.

Great fun guys, see you at Sharkathon.
