Curmit, Repo Pirate Vato, and I headed down expecting the worst
of conditionsfor the weekend on Friday morning. Friday morning was
beautiful but we got out just as the wind once again begun to blow. While
the seas were starting to pick up and an already established strong current
ripping north, we stopped at a wreck and picked up some Pompano. We got word
that no one was fishing the jetty and bombed down.
We get there and setup around sunset and begin throwing finger
mullet picking up several Slot Reds and many, many Bluefish. One of Curmits
rods goes off and ends up being a nice fat Bull Red.
Not long I hook up on an Ambasseduer and after a good fight I land an impressive
Bull Red as well.
Shortly after another one of Curmits Redfish rods goes off and gets hooked
up on a strong fish.
Curtis ends up landing a 5'3" Bullshark on a Oz-made Redfish/Snapper leader.
After the release Curmit gets one more Bull Red in the weee-hours
of the morning, probably the smallest of the night at around 40".
The next morning things were slow and continued to be slow all
afternoon. The wind was blowing 15-20mph from the South-Southwest majority
of the day. I decided to head down the rocks and run some baits out in the
protection of the jetty.
I end up landing a couple of Rays and a Pompano, which were
released quickly with a leader and hook attatched. James, an old pier fishing
buddy of mine, came down and decided to run a couple baits with me. We had
5 fresh baits out at around 4pm and the wind unexpectedly switched out of
the North blowing pretty good. Not long and I get hooked up on my super-6.
With the current of the outgoing tide and the westerly wind howling, the
shark took off with the current and was able to stop her right before the
end of the jetties.
We get the shark in a safe position for both us and itself and
I go get the camera and measuring tape. Coming back the 'Ozinator' rod goes
off and I am carrying the equipment and the rod to the shark not to cause
a cluster****. We get a quick pic of the 5'8" Blacktip and quickly release
her. While you can't tell, the rod I am holding is hooked up on another shark.
Due to not being able to fight the shark in time it shoots the
tip of the jetties on me and I had to go catch up with it. I get her up at
the worst possible spot at that time but that is where we had to land her.
I get in a 5'4" Bull Shark and super thanks to James for helping with the
release.
We get back to the rods and the sun is going down. The 3 remaining
baits would all get blasted and we would briefly hookup before the sharks
charging in and shaking the hook. After all the baits got nailed, I headed
back in to camp where Shark Repo Pirate Vato TJ lands an oversized Red with
a fresh unique bite mark on it.
Despite the conditions we caught the fish and brought home several
Reds and Bluefish. I have a feeling within the next week or so there will
be one or two days where it will absolutely be going off and will have to
be lucky to time it right.. probably during the middle of the week. Nice
fishing guys.
See you on the Sand
